About Chaugan Stadium

Chaugan Stadium is the old royal sports ground inside the walled city, between Gangauri Bazaar and City Palace and close to the Govind Dev Ji temple. Its name comes from chaugan, an old word for polo, and the ground has long been tied to royal spectacle. It is a venue for Teej festivities and sits on the route of both the Teej and Gangaur processions, which pass along Gangauri Bazaar on their way from City Palace towards Talkatora. The Elephant Festival was first held here before it moved to the polo ground. Today it is mainly a city sports ground used for cricket and local tournaments, and it fills with spectators on the two procession evenings.
