Jaipur Kite Festival 2027: Makar Sankranti on 14 January

Jaipur's Kite Festival is on Thursday 14 January 2027, the date Rajasthan Tourism lists for it and the day the city has always flown kites for Makar Sankranti. Drik Panchang places the Sankranti observance itself on Friday 15 January in 2027, so expect kites in the sky on both days. This is the one festival Jaipur celebrates from its rooftops. From morning the old city's terraces fill with families, speakers and plates of til laddoos, gajak and pakoras, and the sky over the walled city is crowded with paper kites until dusk, when lanterns and fireworks take over. The tourism department organises a Kite Festival with kite-flying displays and folk performances for visitors, held in recent years on the Jal Mahal promenade. Kites and string are sold across the old city in the weeks before, with the biggest concentration of shops around Handipura and Haldiyon ka Rasta. Two rules matter: glass-coated and nylon 'Chinese' manjha is banned, and the district administration has in recent years barred kite flying in the early morning and around sunset to protect birds. The Jaipur Literature Festival opens on the same day. This page lists kite-flying events, rooftop parties and Sankranti celebrations in Jaipur.

Good to know
- The best kite-flying is from a walled-city rooftop. Heritage hotels and havelis sell terrace passes with lunch, and they book out early.
- Use only plain cotton string. Nylon and glass-coated manjha is banned and is dangerous to birds and riders.
- If you ride a two-wheeler on 13โ15 January, wear a scarf around your neck and ride slowly under flyovers and on open roads.
- Check the district administration's order for the hours when kite flying is not allowed, usually around dawn and dusk.
- Stay on for the evening. Lantern releases and fireworks start at sunset across the old city.
- Wear sunglasses and a cap. You will be looking up into the winter sun for hours.
